THE DEMONSTRATION OF MAN'S PRESENT PERFECTION

One finding himself forced to retire from active duty, tempted with self-pity and the belief of frustration and uselessness, might well ponder the following Biblical statement (Eccl. 3:15): "That which hath been is now; and that which is to be hath already been; and God requireth that which is past."

That which is real and true now and always has been real and true is God's allness and goodness and His reflection, man, a perfect spiritual idea. Mary Baker Eddy states (The First Church of Christ, Scientist, and Miscellany, p. 12), "We own no past, no future, we possess only now." And she continues, "Faith in divine Love supplies the ever-present help and now, and gives the power to 'act in the living present.'"

What possibilities for continuing activity, usefulness, interest, and growth are inspired by the security implicit in these words! Alertness, wisdom, intelligence, judgment, joy, love, and helpfulness are qualities of God and are therefore ageless and perfect. They belong to the real man by his reflection of Love, God. They cannot deteriorate through use, be restricted by time, or be obstructed by mortal mind's spurious claims either of immaturity or age. As these qualities are expressed in one's human affairs, they will bear fruit according to one's fidelity to Truth.
