THE STRAIGHT AND NARROW WAY

In his Sermon on the Mount, Christ Jesus said (Matt. 7:14), "Strait is the gate, and narrow is the way, which leadeth unto life, and few there be that find it." Although the word "strait" means "narrow," or "restricted," yet this Bible verse has led to the commonly used and scientifically significant phrase, "the straight and narrow way," in which the word "straight," meaning "having an invariable direction," or "direct," is used.

To many people the straight and narrow way suggests a path forbidding and uninteresting and difficult to follow, for such seems to be the impression gained from the customary use of the phrase. And yet we learn in Christian Science that such an impression is unfounded and false. With a proper understanding of the truth of being, the straight and narrow way progressively becomes the harmonious and perfect way—the one earnest students of Christian Science really wish to follow.

What is the straight and narrow way? It is the Christly way, and one is on it when he accepts as true the allness of God, good, and the unreality of matter and evil, and lives accordingly. Mary Baker Eddy states in "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" (p. 151): "All that really exists is the divine Mind and its idea, and in this Mind the entire being is found harmonious and eternal. The straight and narrow way is to see and acknowledge this fact, yield to this power, and follow the leadings of truth."
