In the opening sentence of a...

In the opening sentence of a sermon entitled "The People's Idea of God," Mary Baker Eddy says (p. 1), "Every step of progress is a step more spiritual." I should like to take this opportunity to share a step of progress in the hope that it will be of benefit to others.

One morning I awoke with a severe sense of congestion. I had a soreness in my throat, and I could not talk without considerable effort. Being a soloist in a branch Church of Christ, Scientist, I began to wonder if it would not be wise to call the clerk and let her know that I could not be there on Sunday. I immediately denied this subtle suggestion of error that would try to prevent me from being in my right place and turned to "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mrs. Eddy, for help in working this out.

I opened the Glossary and found this glorious definition of man (p. 591): "The compound idea of infinite Spirit; the spiritual image and likeness of God; the full representation of Mind." I had read this passage many times before, but never did it seem to have such a deep significance.
