I spent a quarter of a century in...

I spent a quarter of a century in the Far East. While there I got into the habit of drinking wine. This habit became particularly aggravated after my arrival in France about five years ago. The utter impossibility of securing employment which would enable me to use my talents led me to seek escape in drinking. Finally, after I had done much prayerful work on this problem, and with the untiring help of a Christian Science practitioner, I was completely healed of the drinking habit, although the problem of right place, which was instrumental in my despair, was not solved until a later date.

With this healing came also healings of insomnia and of the smoking habit of over forty years' standing. These victories enabled me to become a member of The Mother Church and of a branch church; for this privilege, I am very grateful.

The condition of insomnia I had believed to be hereditary. During several years I had been unable to sleep for more than a couple of hours a night, even after taking many sleeping pills. No specific metaphysical work was done on this particular problem, either by the practitioner or by myself, but the healing came about naturally as I progressed in Science.

I am also grateful for the regeneration of character that my study of Christian Science has brought about. Such unlovely traits as quick temper and irritability have given place to calmness and poise.

Recently I developed the symptoms of what might have been diagnosed as influenza. I knew that it was not true, but merely an illusion of material sense. I decided to stay at home and heal the condition. Through a friend, I informed the head usher of the branch church of which I am a member that I would be unable to be at my post.

Then I started pondering the statements on pages 391-393 of the chapter entitled "Christian Science Practice" in the textbook. Science and Health by Mrs. Eddy. One short statement drew my particular attention, It reads (p. 393), "Rise in the strength of Spirit to resist all that is unlike good." And that is what I did. This rising enabled me to realize that I had been talked into believing I could be sick because of somebody's remark regarding a possibility of catching cold at the unheated plant where I worked. This suggestion had taken me unawares and had become rooted in my consciousness.

I then got dressed and went to church, arriving just in time to be at my post as an usher. Needless to say, I was completely free. Early next morning I went back to work. Despite the unheated plant, the fear of influenza found no abiding place in my consciousness, because I had proved its nothingness.

I wish to express my sincere and humble gratitude to Mrs. Eddy for having given us this revelation of Truth. I am also thankful to the practitioners, who are always ready to stand by us during our testing times.—Arkady M. Grekow, Paris, France.
