THE POWER OF UNIVERSAL LOVE

At the last supper, shortly before his betrayal and crucifixion, our Master, Christ Jesus, said to his disciples (John 13:34), "A new commandment I give unto you, That ye love one another; as I have loved you, that ye also love one another." To obey this commandment, and thus find peace, we need to gain an understanding of how Jesus loved.

We know that his great love healed sickness, destroyed sin, fed the multitude, and raised the dead. To accomplish these mighty works, he must have had a clear concept of God, infinite Love, and of man as created in God's image and likeness.

Christian Science shows that to love as Jesus loved is to learn to behold this perfect man and to repudiate the false belief that man is created materially and is subject to sin, sickness, and death. As we do this, it becomes easy for us to love mankind. Mary Baker Eddy writes (Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures, p. 266), "Universal Love is the divine way in Christian Science." Here Love is used as a synonym for God. When we see that divine Love is expressed by man in His image and likeness, we become aware of the great power we possess by reflecting this Love and thus alleviating the world's woes.
