Words are inadequate to express...
Words are inadequate to express my gratitude for the blessings received since I learned of Christian Science and began the study of our textbook, Science and Health by Mary Baker Eddy, for now I know God to be all good.
The instantaneous healing of a heart attack proved to me that when thought is lifted above the evidence of the senses into true, spiritual identification of oneself as God's image and likeness, false belief and fear are dispersed. To satisfy my family, I had visited an eminent physician, who had diagnosed the condition as a serious heart disease.
A few weeks later I was driving my automobile when an attack occurred. I felt that I was losing consciousness, but I declared firmly that God is my Life. Then I noticed a gasoline station just ahead and drove in and stopped. The next thing I knew a station attendant was asking me anxiously if he could help me. So I asked if I could make a telephone call. He helped me to the office and dialed the number I gave him.
When the Christian Science practitioner answered my call, I could scarcely whisper my request for help; but he understood and began to speak gently of God's allness and the truth of my identity. Then he asked a question, and to my amazement I answered in a voice that was firm and clear, and I felt strong.
Soon I remarked that I was sure I could return home. Then the practitioner asked, "Where were you going?" I replied that I was on a business errand across town. He told me that I was in God's care, and therefore I could continue going on my errand if I cared to, and I did so without difficulty. This occurred fourteen years ago, and there has been complete freedom ever since.
That this Science is a practical religion to be used every moment has been proven to me many times. The consecrated study of the Bible and of Science and Health has taught me to realize the allness of God's power and to love my fellow men understandingly.
At one time there was an attempt to cause me to lose some valuable property, and the case was in litigation for more than five years. Many times I was advised to give up the case and let the property go, since it seemed not worth what I was enduring. However, I could not do this, for I felt I would be acting in a manner that would dishonor and limit God's power.
At one point, my senior attorney, who is of high repute, wrote a letter to me, stating there was no way that he could see that I could win a forthcoming trial, for the opposition had made many accusations. He advised me to quit and take my loss. After two days of prayer and study, I went to his office, reviewed the case with him, and informed him that all I wanted was what was right and just and that I expected to have it; therefore I wished to continue with the trial. He kindly consented to do this.
I requested the help of a Christian Science practitioner and continued my study. These statements from Science and Health comforted and sustained me (p. 129): "Truth is ever truthful, and can tolerate no error in premise or conclusion," and (p. 453): "Honesty is spiritual power. Dishonesty is human weakness, which forfeits divine help."
At subsequent trials these truths were demonstrated, and I received all funds due me. The junior counsel told me at the conclusion of the trial that he had not thought it possible I could win, and he concluded by saying, "You have something that brought you through." I told him it was the understanding of the law and power of God that I had learned from the study of Christian Science.
I am grateful for the quiet, peaceful atmosphere of the Christian Science Reading Rooms. On each of many visits I have left refreshed and with uplifted thought. I am also grateful for the two Sanatoriums of the Christian Science Benevolent Association, where we may enjoy rest and study, as well as experience the healing truth.
Membership in The Mother Church and in a branch church and the privilege of class instruction I consider to have been the most important steps in my spiritual growth. My gratitude to God grows daily for our Way-shower, Christ Jesus, and for our beloved Leader, Mrs. Eddy.—(Mrs.) Betty Weatherwax Beaudreau, Altadena, California.
