GOD'S CALL AND OUR ANSWER

In the Bible are to be found accounts of God's call to spiritually receptive individuals. Usually these calls indicated what the individual had to do. For example, God's call to Moses on one occasion was this: "Speak unto the children of Israel, that they go forward" (Ex. 14:15). Moses' response to this urging of God was immediate and practical. He forthwith lifted up his rod over the Red Sea. And the sea parted to let the great multitude pass through to freedom on dry ground.

Christian Science reveals to us that God's call to all is persistent and perpetual. It is always being voiced, and through the sharpening of our spiritual senses it can be heard today as in Bible times. Actually, each individual is within hearing of the call of God, for His presence is everywhere. Each one is in reality able to hear God speak to his inward consciousness, his spiritual sense.

Mary Baker Eddy affirms in "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" (p. 89), "Spirit, God, is heard when the senses are silent." If we are asleep under the influence of mortal or material sense, we are asleep to the ever-present voice of God. But we can awaken as spiritual sense stirs thought from its dreams of the reality of life in matter.
