When I first attended a service...

When I first attended a service in a branch Church of Christ, Scientist, I had no conscious interest in Christian Science. I attended only to please a friend. After the service my friend, who was a member of the church, asked me how I liked it. I replied politely; but the fact was that I had found the hour very long, and I did not seem to take in anything that was said.

However, as we walked up the street together later, this friend and her husband told me something of Christian Science. I had been suffering from a badly injured knee, which a doctor had said was incurable. After we had talked for a little while, I questioned, "Do you mean to say that if I would study Christian Science, my knee would get all right?"

They assured me it would. I did not know whether to believe this or not; but I was imbued with a great sense of how wonderful it would be if what they told me could be true, for it painted life as a lovelier picture than I had ever known it to be.
