TRUST IN HIM
Trust all to God, the Father,
Confide thou in none other,
He is thy sole defense;
He cares for thee past measure,
Seek Him who has thy treasure,
Thy helper is omnipotence.
This wonderful assurance is found in the Christian Science Hymnal (No. 361). As one learns to trust in his heavenly Father, he is walking in the footsteps of the Way-shower, Christ Jesus.
Twenty-four hours of each day, the Master trusted in God with all his heart, or thought. As a result, he demonstrated that God, Spirit, alone is eternal Life. All must sooner or later follow him who said (John 14:6), "I am the way, the truth, and the life: no man cometh unto the Father, but by me."
The writer of the epistle to the Hebrews records in the eleventh chapter many instances in which individuals who placed their full faith and trust in God were victorious over sin, sickness, lack, war, and death.
Anyone, no matter how low he may have sunk morally or how ill or helpless he may appear to be, can immediately turn his thought to God in prayer and be healed through spiritual understanding. Sincere trust, coupled with genuine repentance, brings freedom.
There is no trouble so great that it cannot be healed by a correct understanding of God and of man, made in His likeness. Someone may say: "This may be true; but how can it help me? My case is desperate!"
Christian Science teaches that God is Spirit, supreme and infinite. Since as Spirit He fills all space, He knows nothing about matter or material conditions. Since He did not make them, they do not really exist. "It is our ignorance of God, the divine Principle, which produces apparent discord, and the right understanding of Him restores harmony," writes Mary Baker Eddy in "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" (p. 390).
Our real selfhood is spiritual and perfect and lives eternally in divine Mind as idea. God is man's real and only Father-Mother, and the man of His creating can never be sick, sinful, or dying. He is always complete, expressing God-given dominion and well-being. He operates under the law, order, and action of divine Principle. All of God's children, His ideas, dwell together in the security of fetterless Mind.
As we understand these truths it becomes natural for us to trust in God's all-loving care under every circumstance. For example, whatever seems to be abnormal can be righted when we trust in God's all-inclusive love and perfection.
A Christian Scientist was told by a dentist to return in a few days to have a tooth filled. An appointment was made. Later the Scientist thought to himself, "I do not have to believe or accept this erroneous condition about my tooth." He realized that in absolute reality God, Spirit, is the only true substance; therefore the man that God knows and sees is spiritual and free. It was also seen that matter does not exist as a fact in real being.
The Scientist also knew that decay is illusion and has no place in a spiritual idea. He saw that decay, then, must be an aggressive mental suggestion of the so-called mortal mind. Declaring that because Love, or God, is ever present, fear does not exist anywhere, the Scientist held to the truth that man is spiritual.
He kept his appointment. After carefully examining the tooth, the dentist said, "Everything is fine." The tooth was whole. Another examination a year later brought the same report.
Mrs. Eddy tells us in "Miscellaneous Writings" (p. 297), "Trust Truth, not error; and Truth will give you all that belongs to the rights of freedom."
Christian Science teaches that the more one is willing to trust himself and his loved ones to the heavenly Father, the more he is protected from the mutable ways of mortal mind. God is always All-in-all, and He knows it throughout eternity. He has no opposition.
The trust eternal is the trust in God. The Psalmist declared (Ps. 20:7), "Some trust in chariots, and some in horses: but we will remember the name of the Lord our God."
