"AND GOD BLESSED THEM"

IN the first chapter of Genesis it is recorded that "God created man in his own image, ... male and female created he them." And the very next words of the record state, "And God blessed them." This blessing, this everlasting benediction, has never been and can never be reversed, for God is changeless, infinite Love.

Yet from earliest times there have been those who have believed that through evil thoughts, or imprecations, mankind could curse or be cursed. Two dictionary meanings of "curse" read as follows: "A prayer or invocation for harm or injury to come upon one," and, "The opposite of blessing."

Among primitive peoples an almost overwhelming fear was attached to the supposed effect of a curse upon the life and happiness of an individual or a tribe. And in our own times, there are still those who superstitiously believe in the power of a curse. But in Christian Science we learn that there is no such power, for God, good, is omnipotent. So-called prayers invoking injury to another have no God to hear them. God hears only righteous prayer, humble, loving, beneficent prayer.
