I have had many proofs of the healing efficacy of Christian Science. My first physical healing occurred during a Wednesday evening testimony meeting. I had a sty on my eye, the evidence of which had been called to my attention several times by fellow workers. That evening while I was attending church, a testimony was given relating a healing of a similar condition. When I returned home, I found I was perfectly free, and I have had no recurrence of the trouble.
I am especially grateful for God's loving care and guidance in working out a problem of unemployment during the depression. While I did not realize it, I had been looking to a salary as my source of supply, and I found this salary getting smaller and smaller until it was finally cut off entirely and I was out of work. With the help of a Christian Science practitioner, I learned that what I really needed was spiritual ideas. Mrs. Eddy tells us in "Miscellaneous Writings" (p. 307), "God gives you His spiritual ideas, and in turn, they give you daily supplies."
During this experience many errors were uncovered, such as self-pity, self-love, self-condemnation, an inferiority complex, and a feeling of resentment. Like Nicodemus, I learned that I had to be born again, and much time and study was devoted to Mrs. Eddy's article "The New Birth" (ibid., pp. 15-20). Daily trips were made to a Christian Science Reading Room for prayer and study.
Not long after this, I thought of a business acquaintance whom I had not previously contacted. When I called on him and told him of my need and of my qualifications, he referred me to three companies which were in need of a man with my training. Immediately I made contacts with these companies. In each case I was favorably received and offered a position. The proof that the decision as to which offer to accept was under divine direction is the fact that I am still employed by the company I chose twenty-five years ago.
Mrs. Eddy tells us on page 574 of Science and Health, "The very circumstance, which your suffering sense deems wrathful and afflictive, Love can make an angel entertained unawares." Her statement was surely proved in my case, for through this experience I was led to membership in The Mother Church and a branch church, where I have been able to serve in many capacities, including that of First Reader. I have also had the privilege of class instruction and am truly grateful for Christian Science.—Oliver C. Fischer, Glendale, Missouri.
