THE SPIRITUAL EMPHASIS IN EDUCATION

[Of Special Interest to Young People]

Spirituality was evident in the successful lives of Daniel and Paul. At various times both men were faced with seemingly tragic circumstances, for instance, when Daniel was thrown into the lions' den (see Dan. 6:16), or when Paul was attacked by a poisonous viper (see Acts 28:3). Yet their spiritually minded approach to life enabled them to be subject to the control of God, divine Love, and to triumph over evil.

Mary Baker Eddy says in "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" (p. 514), "Understanding the control which Love held over all, Daniel felt safe in the lions' den, and Paul proved the viper to be harmless." These men were spiritually prepared to meet any emergencies which arose in their careers.

Let the college student also be spiritually prepared to meet the exigencies of human existence. Viewing the period of academic study as a proving ground, the student who is a Christian Scientist should welcome the challenges to overcome the temptation, discouragement, disorder, ignorance, or insecurity which sometimes arises in academic life. The student who early learns to annul these false phases of mortal belief by understanding the presence of the one Mind, God, is gaining the necessary spiritual strength for truly successful living.
