Signs of the Times

Dr. Trevor Davies in a column of The Christian World London, England

Viscount Grey wrote: "I think one of the saddest things as you reflect on the history of the world is the mischief which has been done, the opportunities which have been missed, by men with great powers in great places being unable to forget themselves." That goes for little men in small places as well. The bullying schoolboy, the domineering foreman, the tyrannical employer, the possessive parent, the officious clerk, the caustic-tongued teacher—what misery they cause! ...

Always the august Powers that reign above thwart the attempts of mortals to usurp their place and unduly exalt themselves. Jesus tells H is friends "that the rulers of the Gentiles lord it over them"; but He adds: "It shall not be so among you; but whoever would be great among you must be your servant" [Rev. Stand. Ver.]. A salutary reminder that true power is not in the exercise of force, but in nobility of spirit!
