November 5, 1904, stands out as...
November 5, 1904, stands out as the most eventful and wonderful day in our home, because on that day, through Christian Science, my mother was healed of neurasthenia after years of invalidism. The revelation of Truth was so clear that it seemed perfectly natural to put it into practice in our home, where there were five small children. About a year later, the privilege of class instruction was granted my parents, and for more than forty years they had the joy of serving in the Master's vineyard in many capacities.
As one of the small children now grown, I wish to express my gratitude for that early training in Christian Science at home and in the Christian Science Sunday School. It taught me to put my trust in God, the Giver of all good, and to listen for His voice.
Through the years, I have demonstrated many times the transforming power of Mind. While working for a master's degree in graduate school, I had to take a final comprehensive examination in a subject which I had studied but a short time. A member of the class whose background furnished complete preparation thought I was foolish even to try to answer the questions.
I studied the definition of man, given on page 591 of the Glossary of Science and Health by Mary Baker Eddy, and dwelt long on that part of the definition which defines man as "the full representation of Mind." To my joy I found upon entering the examination room that one of the topics given us for the required essay was one I had studied thoroughly. I even knew supporting quotations. I passed the examination and praised the all knowing Mind, God.
For a while after entering the teaching profession, I battled with the tormenting suggestions of inadequacy and timidity; and I even thought of leaving this field of activity. But I knew this mortal suggestion was without substance, without reality. A closer, deeper study of Christian Science gave me a better appreciation of God-given ability.
In October, 1946, all the schools in New York City were directed to mark by special program the opening of the United Nations General Assembly. When the directive came, I did not know how a kindergarten class could do this; so I listened for Mind's guidance.
That day as the children gathered about the table for mid morning lunch, the idea came to tell them that not far away another group of people—men and women from many nations—were gathered to try to find out how the world could have real peace. I asked the children if they would like to send a letter to the United States Ambassador to the United Nations to tell him what they thought about war and peace.
The response was immediate, and I took the dictation of expressions that followed in rapid succession from the eager group. The children's letter became the subject of world-wide comment. One gratifying result was the opportunity to contribute a chapter to a book on peace education in the schools.
Looking back to the time when I was tempted to leave the teaching field, I am ever thankful that I did not yield to the temptation. Gratitude to God, to our Master, Christ Jesus, and to our revered Leader, Mrs. Eddy, can best be expressed by a life of devotion to the Cause of Christian Science.—(Miss) Alma M. Haring, Richmond Hill, New York.
