Christian Science came into my life when I was a child, and I did not know then the new way of life that was opening up for me. I was grateful, of course, for my first physical healing, but it was not until I reached manhood that I began to realize and appreciate the meaning of this early experience. My gratitude is without bounds for the understanding of man's relationship to God and the freedom that this brings from the material belief of man and life.

My first healing was of blood poisoning in the leg. I had been playing barefooted in my front yard one summer day and had stepped on a rusty nail that gashed my heel deeply. My mother cleaned and dressed the cut, but when I awoke the following morning, I was manifesting symptoms of blood poisoning.

My mother had studied Christian Science for a number of years, but no one else in the immediate family was interested. I only knew it was something she believed in that gave her comfort. Calmly, she sat on my bed and asked if I wanted a doctor or if I wanted to try Christian Science. Without thinking much about it, I said I would try Christian Science; so my mother called a practitioner for prayerful help. I remember they talked for about fifteen minutes, during which time all the symptoms of the condition left me. I got up and was starting to dress when my mother returned to my room.
