Shortly after my birth, my mother began to study Christian Science and to practice its teachings. Because my mother understood and applied what she had learned, our family had healings of illnesses and broken bones.

At one time my brother suffered from a chronic kidney ailment that, although a minor difficulty, was very annoying. When it did not respond to my mother's scientific treatment, she decided to discuss it with a Christian Science practitioner. As a result of her visit with the practitioner and his prayerful metaphysical support, my brother was soon healed.

While in conversation with the practitioner, my mother also asked him for spiritual enlightenment concerning my tendency to be oversensitive and timid in meeting people. In the conversation it was brought out that I had a club foot; but because it was a congenital condition, my mother said that nothing could be done about it. The practitioner reminded her of Jesus' healing of the man born blind, related in the ninth chapter of John, and also of Mrs. Eddy's statement in Science and Health (p. 414), "The Christian Scientist's argument rests on the Christianly scientific basis of being."
