A DEMAND OF PROGRESS

If the question were put to a student of Christian Science, "Do you desire to progress in your understanding of this Science?" an unequivocal, "Yes," would undoubtedly be the answer. Would the reply be just as prompt and positive if he were asked, "Are you willing to give up false concepts, hampering beliefs, and erroneous thought habits for the sake of progressing?"

Everyone knows that a would-be swimmer cannot make even a start until he is willing to get into the water. So it is with the one who would gain proficiency in the demonstration of Christian Science. The teachings of this Science require of the student a radical cutting loose from all false beliefs and practices, which hinder his advancement.

A prerequisite for genuine progress in the understanding of the Science of being is set forth by Mary Baker Eddy on pages 323 and 324 of "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures." Under the marginal heading "Childlike receptivity," she writes: "Willingness to become as a little child and to leave the old for the new, renders thought receptive of the advanced idea. Gladness to leave the false landmarks and joy to see them disappear,—this disposition helps to precipitate the ultimate harmony." A study of this passage makes clear to the learner that he must be not only willing to part with wrong concepts, but joyous to be rid of them.
