In ... the record of Jesus' life and teaching, deeds and doing are stressed as the marks of Christian discipleship. Jesus himself went about "doing good." He was a doer of all that he taught, occupied with deeds of love and mercy, healing diseases, ministering to human need, concerned for all ... men, especially for those disregarded by society, the "publicans and sinners"' of that period of history.

Early in his ministry, when returning to his home town of Nazareth, he chose a passage from Isaiah to present the program to which he was dedicated, stating that the imperatives of consecration by the Spirit of the Lord were "to preach the gospel to the poor; ... to preach deliverance to the captives, and recovering of sight to the blind, to set at liberty them that are bruised, to preach the acceptable year of the Lord." Consecration demands deeds....
