The experience that I shall relate...
The experience that I shall relate here took place about three years ago. To me, it was an opportunity to awaken my understanding of healing through the Christ-idea and to prove the power of divine Love. For this, I felt and have continued to feel a great sense of gratitude.
Following an X-ray examination, obligatory in the public school where I was teaching, I was told that I had a defective lung, that I was generally run down, and that I must go on leave for several months and have complete rest and quiet. As a student of Christian Science, I wanted to put into practice what I had been able to assimilate of its teachings; so I immediately set off the same day, a raw day in March, to see a practitioner. With difficulty, induced by coughing, I told her the situation.
The practitioner was silent and attentive. Then to my utter amazement she casually asked me to read aloud a lecture on Christian Science which she took from a drawer. As I read the coughing decreased.
On my way home, I realized with astonishment that she had boldly and promptly reversed the inharmonious condition and that it was now up to me to maintain what had been gained. The next day the coughing stopped altogether, and my fear subsided. In the weeks that followed I would study the Bible and the works of Mary Baker Eddy for hours at a time. Those were weeks of blessing, for I was wholeheartedly absorbed in my study, and I received much enlightenment and genuine uplift.
When vacation time came, I decided to go to England, not to the sunny south of France, which had been so strongly recommended. I went to a small hotel which, because of its location on the main street, was quite noisy. In addition, my room was on the mezzanine floor, where I was troubled by gasoline fumes that the large busses belched forth all day long and a good part of the night. This fact distressed me greatly, and my first night was a difficult one.
On the following morning a Christian Scientist who was a resident of the hotel inquired about my first impressions, and when I told her about my distressing situation she exclaimed, "But how can that affect you?"
I kept thinking this over all day long and finally dismissed the idea of changing my room or my hotel. I saw clearly that my harmony was not in place or things but in my own spiritualized consciousness. I prayed and struggled earnestly to overcome the sense of discord. The second night I slept normally, and the several weeks I stayed there were most beneficial. I had gained my peace, and I presented every evidence of good health.
Back home, just before school began again, I was summoned for another medical examination, and the doctor stated that I was entirely well. I received authorization to take up my classes again and did so. I have been very well and happy ever since, and the privilege of class instruction gave me a new source of joy and inspiration.
Truly "Love inspires, illumines, designates, and leads the way" (Science and Health by Mrs. Eddy, p. 454). I express my deep gratitude to God for Mrs. Eddy and for the whole Christian Science organization.—(Miss) Josephine Brunaud, Paris, France.
