"WHEN HE SHALL APPEAR, WE SHALL BE LIKE HIM"

A Practitioner of Christian Science sat in her office late one afternoon after a busy day and pondered on the number of calls she had had that day, each person asking for help for the disappearance of some inharmonious condition. Even if not voiced in these exact words, the thought had been, "Help me to get rid of something"—a disease, lack of money to meet the immediate needs, or discordant home relations.

The practitioner thought, "No one has asked me to pray for the appearing of the Christ; and yet the promise is (I John 3:2), 'When he shall appear, we shall be like him.' What else is there to pray for but the appearing of the Christ, the true idea of God, in human consciousness, which necessarily dispels any belief of pain, disease, lack, or inharmony?" In Colossians we read (3:4), "When Christ, who is our life, shall appear, then shall ye also appear with him in glory."

What is it that would seem to obstruct the appearing of the Christ? Could it be some trait of character, such as stubbornness, pride, willfulness, or selfishness? Could it be mental laziness, an unwillingness to apply the truths we have been taught? Could it be lack of understanding of the value of Church and of Mary Baker Eddy and her mission to the world?
