THE IMPORTANCE OF SPIRITUAL ALERTNESS

"You command the situation if you understand that mortal existence is a state of self-deception and not the truth of being," writes Mary Baker Eddy in "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" (p. 403). One cannot be deceived if he is alert to the ever-presence of divine reality.

A young man dreamed he was far out in the ocean, swimming effortlessly. Cutting through the water, he passed a package of cigarettes attractively wrapped and thought that even though he did not smoke, he could pick them up for someone else. Believing that he was doing a kind deed, the swimmer turned back. As he did so, the water suddenly became turbulent. A tremendous sea serpent was churning the water. While kicking and fighting the serpent, the young man awakened.

When shall we stop believing the dream of mortal existence? Mrs. Eddy states (ibid., pp. 218, 219), "When we wake to the truth of being, all disease, pain, weakness, weariness, sorrow, sin, death, will be unknown, and the mortal dream will forever cease." Christian Science shows that it is only in our dreams that life in matter can take on a semblance of reality.
