GOD'S LAW OF LIBERTY

Today we hear much about the freedoms of the world—of nations struggling for their conception of freedom, of people fighting the infringements of their individual liberties, of the laws that limit their freedom. Just how can we find a law that will give us a really secure sense of freedom?

Christian Science answers this question in the words of Mary Baker Eddy. She writes in "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" (p. 224): "The power of God brings deliverance to the captive. No power can withstand divine Love." And later in the paragraph she adds: "Whatever enslaves man is opposed to the divine government. Truth makes man free." The ever-presence of God's power guarantees our continuing security, because God's power is supreme and ever active and is always a power for good.

The first chapter of Genesis relates that God made man in His own image and likeness and that He gave man dominion over all things. This dominion is our heritage, the divine heritage of all mankind. It includes dominion over limitations and material pressure, and it can never be abused. Paul wrote (II Cor. 3:17), "Where the Spirit of the Lord is, there is liberty."
