Shortly after World War I, a copy of "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mary Baker Eddy was given to me. At the time, I was greatly in need of help, but that was not my reason for studying Science and Health. Nevertheless I was able to grasp many of its truths, and the reading bore fruit.

I had been a student at a university, and it became necessary for me to leave and seek employment in a nearby city. I secured a room in the home of one who had had a healing in Christian Science many years before, and through her I met a Christian Science practitioner and began to attend services in a branch Church of Christ, Scientist.

The first treatment I had from the practitioner lifted a cloud from my thinking, and I knew that I would never again seek any other form of religion or healing. I was able to return to my studies and in due time finish my education. The financial requirements were always met, as were other needs, by the application of the truth as taught in Christian Science.

Many physical healings have been experienced, mostly through the consecrated help of practitioners. For some time I was troubled with indigestion. Also, at times I suffered from severe headaches. I made little progress in solving these problems because of much fear and other wrong thoughts. Also I was encumbered with a false appetite. As my understanding of God's omnipresence and omnipotence increased, the fears and wrong thoughts gradually disappeared. And when the false appetite was overcome, my complete freedom from the functional difficulty was won.

As a result of an accident, I was troubled with an ingrown toenail. After taking up the study of Christian Science, I began to apply its truths to the problem. I used this statement by Mrs. Eddy (Science and Health, p. 424): "Accidents are unknown to God, or immortal Mind, and we must leave the mortal basis of belief and unite with the one Mind, in order to change the notion of chance to the proper sense of God's unerring direction and thus bring out harmony."

I reasoned that if this were true, then nothing had happened to me as God's idea, and therefore I could prove that I need not suffer from that which had never taken place. In a few weeks the nail came off, and when it grew again it was not ingrown.

More recently one of my arms developed a painful condition above the elbow. It was uncomfortable to raise the arm above the shoulder. I remembered that while playing football in high school I had injured this arm, and I was believing that that injury was the cause of the painful condition. I began to work prayerfully, and I applied the truths previously mentioned and also gave much thought to this statement from Science and Health (p. 393): "Have no fear that matter can ache, swell, and be inflamed as the result of a law of any kind, when it is self-evident that matter can have no pain nor inflammation." The condition was healed in a short time, and the healing has remained permanent.

Church activities in several localities, including two college organizations, have been a wonderful education and have greatly benefited me in my journey Spiritward. Throughout the years, I have carried with me a sense of gratitude for God's goodness, and I have carefully guarded my thinking to eliminate any sense of discouragement. I am grateful for the moral support of my wife and of the teacher from whom I had class instruction in Christian Science. My desire is to let my works each day testify to the efficacy of the discovery of our revered Leader, Mrs. Eddy.—Ogden Frank Beeman, Portland, Oregon.
