CHRISTMAS AND PEACE ON EARTH

Something over nineteen and a half centuries ago, an occasion of great activity was in process. The reason given in the Bible is this (Luke 2:1): "It came to pass in those days, that there went out a decree from Cæsar Augustus, that all the world should be taxed." The tax referred to involved a census, and in accordance with the Roman decree the people subject to it were going to their native cities to be numbered.

In the turmoil probably few persons were aware of the birth of a child in the Judean village of Bethlehem. Yet the advent of Christ Jesus was destined to be proclaimed by many throughout succeeding centuries as the most important event of history. It brought to humanity the world's most glorious Teacher and demonstrator of divine Truth, Life, and Love.

Today it may again be said that the whole world is being taxed, but in a different way. It is being taxed by burdensome fears, threats of unthinkable warfare, the tensions and uncertainties of a restless era.
