OUR FATHER

The opening words of the Lord's Prayer (Matt. 6:9), "Our Father," lift our thoughts above materiality to the recognition that we are in reality spiritual ideas—the sons of God. Christ Jesus' daily heedfulness of this sonship enabled him to demonstrate his God-ordained dominion by meeting humanity's need. As students of Christian Science, we know that when we are conscious of our Father's healing presence, our potentialities are unlimited and unrestricted. Sin and sickness are healed by the same metaphysical method that Christ Jesus employed: that of seeing man as God's son, perfect, complete, and Godlike.

The acceptance of one universal Father means the acceptance of the brotherhood of all men. Our putting into practice this brotherhood results in co-operation instead of separation, concord in place of discord. When understanding replaces misunderstanding, the unity of God's universal family is seen to be functioning under the impulsion of Love.

Christlike, or spiritual, thinking purifies the heart and enables us to know and understand ourselves and our brother men as God's children. Mary Baker Eddy writes in "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" (p. 467): "It should be thoroughly understood that all men have one Mind, one God and Father, one Life, Truth, and Love. Mankind will become perfect in proportion as this fact becomes apparent, war will cease and the true brotherhood of man will be established."
