For over twenty-five years Christian Science has been my only healer. To Christ Jesus, our great Master, and to our beloved Leader, Mary Baker Eddy, I owe profound gratitude for all that I have and for all that I am.

During the dark days of the depression it was necessary for me to learn many lessons, particularly those of unselfishness, humility, and joy. When I had done so, an acute problem of supply was solved, and in addition, I was freed from the tobacco and social drinking habits. Also a better sense of home resulted. Human relationships were improved, and the scope of my activity was enlarged as my thought was uplifted and broadened.

During the Second World War, I was marvelously protected while serving in the Navy. On three occasions, in the face of imminent danger, my life was preserved. On one occasion I was a passenger on a Navy transport flight from the Aleutians to the United States. Because one officer desired to stop at Juneau, Alaska, we headed toward that city across the Gulf of Alaska, flying in dense fog at an altitude of only three hundred feet above the water.
