THE FALLING PETAL

A petal from the rose by my bedside
Dropped onto the table with a tiny thud,
Splintering the silence of the breathless hour,
And I became suddenly awake.
Even so a simple truth,
Breaking into consciousness,
Can startle and stimulate
To the possibilities of the new birth,
I thought,
As I accepted the sweet challenge of another dawn.
