BROTHERHOOD

Genesis 4: 3—8

Upon a field of yesterday.
In fabled conflict, there they stood:
Embittered Cain, with sod-grown gift,
And Abel, with the offering good.
For sin lay waiting at the door,
And Cain took in the evil guest.
Against his brother he arose.
And slew the one he could have blessed.

Should envy whisper at the door,
O heart, lift not the latch of doom,
Let not the ruthless tempter pass
Into the beauty of your room.
A quiet worker I would be.
With early fruits of matchless good,
A watchman at the gate of thought,
A guardian of brotherhood.
