THE LANDMARKS OF CHRISTIAN SCIENCE

Many can recall some familiar landmark which has pointed the way to a desired destination. It may have been a road sign, an old tree, the counsel of a parent or schoolteacher, or advice from a business associate. Whatever the sign, if heeded, it no doubt resulted in an improved course.

As these familiar landmarks or guides have helped us along the way, so in our journey heavenward, Christian Science presents landmarks to guide us. Mary Baker Eddy calls our attention to such landmarks in "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures," where she writes (p. 323), "Through the wholesome chastisements of Love, we are helped onward in the march towards righteousness, peace, and purity, which are the landmarks of Science."

It is self-evident that we must first be willing to abandon the false signposts before we can proceed along the right road. There are many verses in the Bible that point to the need to leave false landmarks. The following from Isaiah (2:22) is a good example: "Cease ye from man, whose breath is in his nostrils: for wherein is he to be accounted of?" It is evident that the author of this remarkable statement had caught a glimpse of the truth that "God created man in his own image" (Gen. 1:27).
