DEMONSTRATING GOD'S CONTROL

In days of human trials and conflicts, of violent floods, storms, and other earthly upheavals, men sometimes feel in their ignorance that God has deserted them. Yet just the reverse is the case. It is mankind who because of ignorance of God is suffering the effects of lack of confidence in God's ever-presence and absolute control.

In "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures," Mary Baker Eddy makes a remarkable statement under the marginal heading, "The counterfeit forces." She writes (p. 293), "There is no vapid fury of mortal mind—expressed in earthquake, wind, wave, lightning, fire, bestial ferocity—and this so-called mind is self-destroyed."

In her reference to the vapid fury of mortal mind Mrs. Eddy has given us the clue to supremacy over all earth's discords, as well as to the prevention of them. The word "vapid" implies that which is empty, ignorant, mindless, senseless. Vapid fury is, therefore, that which is without intelligent direction. It represents the emptiness of mortal ignorance.
