RISING ABOVE DISCORDANT SITUATIONS

A Fundamental mistake of mankind is to accept human difficulties as real and then try to fight them with human arguments and methods. Christian Science teaches us to lift our thoughts above the human situation to Christ, Truth, and thus find release.

Mary Baker Eddy writes in "Unity of Good" (p. 11), "Jesus taught us to walk over, not into or with, the currents of matter, or mortal mind." In order to follow the Master, we have to learn that mortal life is not the reality of being. When we awaken from a night dream, we are not likely to take the dream seriously. In the same manner, we learn that material life is only a temporary dream in matter, from which we awaken to the reality of God's spiritual universe. In order to experience this awakening, we do not have to pass on into another life; we have only to change our concepts of existence from a material to a spiritual basis.

We all have had experiences when we have been entirely undisturbed by harsh words spoken to us, while at other times we have lost our sense of proportion over some small remark. It is our mental poise, our spiritual sense of things, which enables us to walk over the currents of mortal mind. The five corporeal senses tend to drag us into a material concept of existence. Therefore it is important for us to recognize that these five senses are deceptive.
