THE FULL VALUE OF THE PERIODICALS

No one knew better than did Mary Baker Eddy the value and need of each one of the Christian Science periodicals, which she founded and established. In the Manual of The Mother Church, Mrs. Eddy writes (Art. VIII, Sect. 14), "It shall be the privilege and duty of every member, who can afford it, to subscribe for the periodicals which are the organs of this Church; and it shall be the duty of the Directors to see that these periodicals are ably edited and kept abreast of the times."

In naming it a duty of The Christian Science Board of Directors to keep the periodicals "abreast of the times," our Leader recognized the importance of keeping pace with the present. While we can appreciate the need for having our periodicals kept "abreast of the times," do we perhaps recognize that there is a definite value to us in keeping abreast of them? It may seem a small point to make, but the mental challenge in attitude and approach is not small.

Our periodicals may be likened to the manna which fed the children of Israel in the wilderness. Each morning they found this manna spread on the ground, and Moses told them to gather enough for the day according to their individual needs, some more and some less. We read in Exodus (16:18), "He that gathered much had nothing over, and he that gathered little had no lack; they gathered every man according to his eating." A most unusual thing about the manna was that all which was over and above the daily requirement was found to be spoiled the next day, except on the Sabbath; but regardless of how little was gathered, the supply was sufficient for the day's need.
