THE WORD BY WHICH WE LIVE
At the beginning of his ministry Christ Jesus was "tempted of the devil" to satisfy his hunger by a resort to matter—by making bread of stones. Jesus responded to the tempter (Matt. 4:4), "Man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word that proceedeth out of the mouth of God."
What is the Word by which man lives, this Word which emanates from the mouth of God? Is it not the Christ, Truth, which has within itself the full measure of God's sustaining nature? The Word of Life, Truth, and Love is the eternal food for all of God's ideas. This Word pours forth from the infinite. It is the unceasing voice of God. Man, God's full expression, is fed perpetually and exclusively by the Word of God.
God makes and maintains all that really exists. He did not make matter or dust. Matter falsely parades as a reality, as a sustaining power, but actually it has within itself only the capacity of disintegration, dissolution, evaporation, and self-destruction. God is eternal, and His Word is an essential aspect of His being. Man, who is spiritual and lives by the eternal Word of God, or Truth, can never cease to exist, nor can he in any respect be reduced in status, be materialized, weakened, or destroyed.
