I have had so many rich experiences...

I have had so many rich experiences that I feel like echoing the words of the Psalmist (Ps. 40:5), "If I would declare and speak of them, they are more than can be numbered." During the Second World War, I served with the Air Force in the Pacific area. I was sent overseas not only once but twice, and during both tours of overseas combat I had many wonderful proofs of divine protection.

While our crew was flying a reconnaissance mission, an enemy warship opened fire on us. I saw the fire of the warship's guns and realized that somewhere between that ship and our plane were missiles of death and destruction. But I also realized that we were really "hid with Christ in God" (Col. 3:3). I reasoned that if we were hid, then we could not be seen by mortal sense and therefore could not be injured by it. We returned safely to our base.

At another time the enemy fire was so close that I was afraid we would be destroyed. I prayed earnestly to know the truth. Immediately the words of Jesus came to me (John 14:6), "I am the way, the truth, and the life." I realized that I was a living witness to the truth. All fear left me instantly, even in the midst of the battle. The next day I pondered the experience and wondered why I had been so afraid. Then I realized that it was because of what I thought the gunfire could do to me. But as soon as I claimed my true selfhood I was released from the fear.
