It has been said that "man's extremity...

It has been said that "man's extremity is God's opportunity." This statement was proved true in my experience a number of years ago when I had a nervous breakdown. I spent several weeks in a hospital and another few weeks at home under a doctor's care. He gave me sedatives several times a day, but to no avail, and I soon became discouraged.

I could not read newspapers or books without being depressed. Then one day a copy of The Christian Science Monitor was mailed to me. I read every page and suddenly realized that instead of being depressed, I felt uplifted. Desperately I reached out to God for guidance, and soon afterwards I was led to a Christian Science practitioner. After my first visit I came home resolved to place full reliance on God, and I emptied the medicine chest. In a very short time I was completely healed of the nervous difficulty through the kind help of the practitioner. This healing served as a big steppingstone on my journey Spiritward.

A year later I experienced the healing of grief at the passing of my mother. God's promise (Isa. 66:13), "As one whom his mother comforteth, so will I comfort you," was fulfilled. Less than two years later we had to give up our home. Again I was sustained by the truth that frees, and through it I gained a truer sense of home. The Bible assures us (II Cor. 5:1), "We have a building of God, an house not made with hands, eternal in the heavens"; and Mrs. Eddy tells us in Science and Health (p. 254), "Pilgrim on earth, thy home is heaven; stranger, thou art the guest of God." It was indeed a blessing that Christian Science had come into my life.
