TALKING WITH GOD

Right ideas emanate from God, limitless Mind. They continuously flow from one tireless source. Nothing can stop, hinder, or obstruct their coming, and when acknowledged and utilized they are instantly effective.

Mary Baker Eddy states in "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" (p. 308), "The Soul-Inspired patriarchs heard the voice of Truth, and talked with God as consciously as man talks with man." One of these patriarchs was Jacob, whose biography may be found in the latter half of the book of Genesis. The Bible narrative tells of a blessing which God bestowed upon Jacob. "God said unto him, Thy name is Jacob: thy name shall not be called any more Jacob, but Israel shall be thy name" (35:10). The story of the blessing closes with these words: "And Jacob called the name of the place where God spake with him, Beth-el."

A Bible dictionary states, "In the troubled times when there was no king in Israel, it was to Bethel that the people went up in their distress to ask counsel of God." The people in ancient Bible times asked counsel of God. The people of our own times are also asking for and are receiving God's guidance. We, as Christian Scientists, can commune more freely with God if we know Him well, if He is our close confidant instead of a far-off or inaccessible judge or ruler.
