Christian Science came on its healing mission into our home when my mother was about to return to a hospital for a second operation on a growth which her doctor had pronounced malignant. A friend in our home at the time loaned her a copy of the textbook, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mary Baker Eddy.

Simply by reading the Bible and this textbook, my mother experienced an instantaneous healing. Very early in her study she was also healed of sick headaches and constipation. Thereafter she experienced more than forty years of abundant good health to an extent she had never known before.

Through Christian Science treatment I was beautifully and quickly healed one summer of what would likely now be called rheumatic fever with complications of pleurisy and double pneumonia. I had grown steadily worse under medical treatment, which my father, who was not a Christian Scientist, had insisted upon. The doctor declared that nothing more could be done for me. He predicted that if I did survive, I would suffer a permanently impaired heart and would have to be kept out of school for at least a year to recuperate.
