"'Let there be light,' is the perpetual...

"'Let there be light,' is the perpetual demand of Truth and Love, changing chaos into order and discord into the music of the spheres." This statement of Mary Baker Eddy's found on page 255 of Science and Health was proved to me in the following experience.

When I was a beginner in Christian Science and a music student struggling with financial limitation, I had need of a record player. Knowing that man is complete and that what is right for him is God-provided, I worked prayerfully from the standpoint of this truth (ibid., p. 269): "Metaphysics resolves things into thoughts, and exchanges the objects of sense, for the ideas of Soul." Releasing the desire for the record player, I reached out for spiritual harmony, the divine idea of Soul.

At this time, employment in a cafeteria provided my livelihood. But I felt an overwhelming sense of inharmony when passing through the kitchen. The clatter of dishes, the sight and smell of food, and even the people there drove me to the point of such distraction that I feared the loss of my mental equilibrium. Feeling a need of help and having nothing to rely on but God, I had to face the situation for myself. I knew it was not the sound or sight of things in that kitchen which needed changing, but my wrong sense of them. I could see that all sense of inharmony must be exchanged for a right concept of Truth.
