LISTEN AND HEAR!

When hearing is believed to be a mortal faculty, it is conceded to be obtained through an organic structure. Hearing is then classified as acute or dull; it is considered liable to impairment or loss; and it is thought to be dependent upon material conditions.

According to Christian Science, hearing is not in reality a material function, but is spiritual perception. Because his disciples understood his parables, Christ Jesus said to them (Matt. 13:16), "Blessed are your eyes, for they see: and your ears, for they hear." One perceives or hears the Word of Truth through the exercise of spiritual qualities, such as receptivity, recognition, and understanding. Since these qualities are neither personal nor physical, they cannot be subject to so-called material laws or conditions.

Spiritual faculties are possessed and expressed by God, and therefore they are eternal and forever perfect. In "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures." Mary Baker Eddy asks (p. 489), "How can man, reflecting God, be dependent on material means for knowing, hearing, seeing?"
