LETTERS TO THE PRESS FROM CHRISTIAN SCIENCE COMMITTEES ON PUBLICATION

The Vermont Cynic Burlington, Vermont

In [a recent] issue of The Vermont Cynic there is an article covering [a] recent panel discussion. ... In reporting the remarks of the Christian Scientist who spoke, there are two statements which might leave a wrong impression with your readers and therefore need correcting. The article states: "Failure of a cure is due to a lack of faith in Christ. ... Thus it is possible for sufficient faith to cure."

It is often erroneously assumed that Christian Science is a faith cure, but this is not so. Mary Baker Eddy, the Discoverer and Founder of Christian Science, makes many references to faith in her writings. Faith, as understood in Christian Science, is always coupled with the spiritual understanding of God, and of man as His image and likeness, as stated in the first chapter of Genesis.
