"IN QUIETNESS AND IN CONFIDENCE"

Too much importance can hardly be attached to the atmosphere in which one studies the Lesson-Sermon in the Christian Science Quarterly, a lesson on which, our beloved Leader, Mary Baker Eddy, tells us, largely depends the prosperity of Christian Science. (See Art. Ill, Sect. I, of the Manual of The Mother Church.)

Manifestly, reading the lesson from a sense of duty accomplishes little more than any task does when it is perfunctorily performed; but the humble, consecrated desire to increase one's understanding of both the Bible and "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mrs. Eddy is a righteous motive which is rewarded in fruitful results. Because the Bible Lessons are compiled through inspiration, they take inspiration and divine intuition fully to comprehend them.

It requires a high degree of attention and devotion to study the Lesson-Sermon properly. That is why it is imperative that we study it in quietness and earnestness. A prayerful attitude should be ours continually. Speaking of praying aright, Mrs. Eddy says in Science and Health (p. 15), "In the quiet sanctuary of earnest longings, we must deny sin and plead God's allness."
