"A DEEP-DRAWN BREATH FRESH FROM GOD"

The growing practice of depending on some material stimulant to give strength or steadiness to endeavor is a far cry from the promise of Jesus when he met a woman at a well and asked her for a drink of water. She perceived, on talking with him, that he was a man of extraordinary character. As he told her of the living water of Truth which he could offer her, he said, referring to the well (John 4: 13, 14), "Whosoever drinketh of this water shall thirst again: but whosoever drinketh of the water that I shall give him shall never thirst; but the water that I shall give him shall be in him a well of water springing up into everlasting life."

True inspiration, courage for endeavor, and enduring strength do not come from material stimulants, vitamins, or drugs. Material potions lead to mental and moral enslavement and ultimately dull the sense of the individual. Mary Baker Eddy writes (Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures, p. 406): "The depraved appetite for alcoholic drinks, tobacco, tea, coffee, opium, is destroyed only by Mind's mastery of the body. This normal control is gained through divine strength and understanding."

What was it that gave strength to Moses when he was sent to lead the children of Israel out of Egypt; to Jacob when, confronted with a hostile brother, he wrestled all night with his thoughts; to Daniel when he faced the lions; and to the young Hebrews when they were thrown into the fiery furnace? It was their dependence on God alone, the ever-present, all-powerful, all-knowing, father-Mother of all creation.
