Mrs. Eddy states (Science and Health, p. 14), "Become conscious for a single moment that Life and intelligence are purely spiritual,— neither in nor of matter,—and the body will then utter no complaints." This truth was proved to me when one of my legs was caught between the bumpers of two automobiles and the bones of the leg sustained a compound fracture. I repeated "the scientific statement of being" (ibid., p. 468) and requested help immediately from a Christian Science practitioner. The company for which I worked required that the leg be X-rayed, set, and placed in a cast.

The remarkable part of this experience is that I felt no pain from the time the leg was broken. Many times I felt the need of reading the Bible and Science and Health, sometimes all night, but there was no pain.

Medical laws were laid down that in all probability I would always have a stiff knee as a result of this experience, that the leg might be in a cast for a year, and that one leg would be shorter than the other when the healing was complete. My leg was in a cast for only a few months; but when the cast was removed, the leg that was broken measured one and a half inches shorter than the other. Consequently I had to wear an extra sole and heel on one shoe, and even then I walked with a decided limp. One trouser leg had to be cut one and a half inches shorter than the other.
