THE AWAKENED

Fanny de Groot Hastings

When Jacob wakened from deep sleep
He rose up, and he knew that where
The angels' ladder made its steep
Ascent to heaven, God was there.

When each awakens, lifts his head
From stony pillows, Love's embrace
Is felt. He says, as Jacob said,
"Surely the Lord is in this place."
