RADIO PROGRAM No. 149 - How a Sailor's Life Was Saved

On this program Douglas Amelang of Greeley, Colorado, told of his own experience. The program was as follows:

Speaker: Have you ever wondered how you can have God's help in time of emergency? Today we're going to discuss how this is possible, and, in fact, we'll bring you an actual example—the firsthand account of how a sailor's life was saved. Our guest is Douglas Amelang of Greeley, Colorado, and now he'll tell you just how this took place.

Mr. Amelang: Well, it was an experience I'll never forget. I was in the Navy at the time, and we had just returned from a six weeks' cruise. The ship was tied up at the dock, and another sailor and I were testing a small compartment for watertight integrity. We were locked inside and even air could not escape. Another sailor outside waited to let us out when the test was over. This man was sent to another part of the ship on an errand; and during his absence three large CO2 cylinders accidentally started to discharge, and the compartment was instantly filled with carbon dioxide, a deadly gas used in fire fighting. Almost immediately this brought the temperature down way below zero, and we became unconscious in a matter of seconds. When we were found and lifted out of the compartment, the other fellow had passed on, but after artificial respiration I was taken to a naval hospital.
