In 1948 I had a severe accident
In 1948 I had a severe accident. I fell some thirty-three feet from a scaffolding. I was taken immediately to the local hospital, where an examination showed that I had several broken bones, concussion of the brain, and other injuries. In addition, widespread inflammation, due to broken bones in the pelvis, set in. For a while I was operated on almost daily and was given large doses of medicine.
After being bedfast for eight months, I was released on crutches to return home. I was a very sick man. In 1950 Christian Science was presented to me for the first time by a dear relative. Instead of accepting it, however, I returned to the hospital for further observation. After a lengthy examination I was told that my trouble was incurable and that I was doomed to be a cripple the rest of my life. I left the hospital feeling downcast and very much discouraged.
On the way home the thought of God came to me. Perhaps, I thought, Christian Science could help me. Fortunately I had the address of a practitioner with me. I went to see her immediately. When she opened the door for me, she must have seen my sadness and despair. I asked her to show me the way to learn of God, and she did so with great sincerity and joy. I went home filled with gladness and hope and in happy frame of mind.
