My first copy of "Science and Health...
My first copy of "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mary Baker Eddy was given me by my sister. She said, "You have always loved God and the Bible; I know you will love this book and its teachings."
During the intervening years her words have proved true. It was soon clear to me that Christian Science was the answer to all the questions I had pondered in my years of membership in an orthodox church which I had joined as a young girl. However, for eight years I continued active membership in that church, although I was daily studying the Christian Science textbooks, the Bible and Science and Health. Even during those years healings came to me just from studying the textbooks.
At one time I became so ill and discouraged that I tried to commit suicide. I was taken to a hospital, where the staff declared I was suffering from cancer, had little likelihood of living much longer, and was demented. Some weeks later I appeared to be passing on. In fact, I heard the head doctor say: "She is gone. It is too bad, because she was a good fighter." I sat right up and declared aloud, "God is my Life."
For over a year I was confined in the hospital because of my physical condition and because I had been pronounced hopelessly insane. Finally, my sister and a friend asked me if I would like to have help in Christian Science. I said that I would, and in one month's time, through the work of a consecrated Christian Science practitioner, who lived a thousand miles away and whom I never saw, I was restored to sanity and normal health.
It would take much more space than is available here to list all the physical healings that have come to me and my three children and a grandson. Better than all these is the spiritual growth in understanding the allness of God that has come to me from the earnest, joyous, daily study of our textbooks.
Membership in The Mother Church and happy participation in the activities of a branch Church of Christ, Scientist, have been rewarding experiences. Our periodicals and the lectures have unfolded much enlightenment. My gratitude to our beloved Leader, Mrs. Eddy, is boundless. My daily prayer is so to live that others may seek the Christ, Truth, which illumines my life. In the words of the Bible (Ps. 104:33), "I will sing unto the Lord as long as I live: I will sing praise to my God while I have my being."—(Mrs.) Louise Wadsworth Manchester, Tiverton, Rhode Island.
