HEARING AND OBEYING

Many people have had the experience of feeling definitely led to take certain steps, make decisions, or follow some line of thought or action, and it has been proved that obedience to this leading has caused other forward steps to appear or new opportunities to unfold. Too often, however, this mental direction is heard, but instead of obediently following it, the individual argues against it, or puts off obeying until a more convenient time, or perhaps fails entirely to heed the direction. Then it is that he invariably has cause to regret the disobedience or delay, and it may seem that opportunities are lost.

How may such disappointments be avoided? Is there no sure way by which we can be saved from countless time-consuming mistakes, from the needless trial-and-error procedures so often followed? Indeed there is. The practical understanding of God and His reflection, spiritual man, as gained through the study of Christian Science, shows us this way.

In "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mary Baker Eddy this definition of God is found (p. 465): "God is incorporeal, divine, supreme, infinite Mind, Spirit, Soul, Principle, Life, Truth, Love." Then it is to Mind that we look for the source of all intelligence, wisdom, guidance. God, perfect Mind, can only manifest complete intelligence, unerring wisdom, and infallible guidance. He also includes and expresses discernment, alertness, dominion, and all other good and desirable qualities.
