Our beloved Leader, Mary Baker Eddy,...
Our beloved Leader, Mary Baker Eddy, writes in the textbook, Science and Health (p. 449), "A grain of Christian Science does wonders for mortals, so omnipotent is Truth, but more of Christian Science must be gained in order to continue in well doing." About twenty years ago I experienced two healings which proved to me that "a grain of Christian Science does wonders for mortals" indeed.
For several years I had been troubled with chronic tonsillitis, which sometimes recurred several times a year and was so severe that I was scarcely able to eat for several days at a time. I usually asked a Christian Science practitioner to work for me during these attacks, but I gained only temporary relief. One day, while attending to my duties in an office, I noticed that symptoms of the condition were starting to develop. This thought came to me very clearly: "Why, my throat of itself has no intelligence. It cannot do anything, either for better or worse." I went about my duties, and it must have been several hours before I remembered the problem again. Then I found my throat was perfectly free, and that was the last of the tonsillitis. The healing was complete, and it has been permanent.
The second healing was that of pleurisy, which had been troubling me for several weeks. I had studied Science and Health and worked for myself as we are taught to do in Christian Science, but the condition did not improve. One day I decided I would get in touch with a practitioner after the Wednesday testimony meeting that evening. As I was walking to the church I asked myself what I thought the practitioner was going to do for me. Was she going to change or make better a condition that was real? The answer came very forcefully to me, No, she is going to help me change my thinking about it—help me to see it for the lie it is. By the time the meeting was half over I realized that the painful condition had disappeared. It has never returned.
