LIGHT BY THE WAYSIDE

Wherever Christ Jesus went he preached the good news of the kingdom of God. He made heaven practical to thousands whom he healed of fears and infirmities. Heaven represents harmony, and the Master's mission was to bestow health and harmony. His consciousness was a heavenly one. He dwelt "in the secret place of the most High" and "under the shadow of the Almighty" (Ps. 91:1).

It was his acute insight into spiritual existence which enabled Jesus to do his mighty works. It was his perception of divine Truth that inspired the multitudes. In an age of ecclesiastical tyranny he was positive and fearless in affirming man's sonship with God, and he proved this truth concerning man to all who were able to receive and understand it.

His healing work was not physical, but metaphysical. The physical sense of life did not greatly concern him. God, Spirit, was his Father, and God was his only Life. He healed by the Spirit. His metaphysical mode of treating disease and sin is of vital import to the student of Christian Science. To give an instance of this healing work one might refer to the case of blind Bartimaeus, who sat beside the highway begging (see Mark 10:46–52). Bartimaeus cried for light and his prayer was divinely and humanly answered. He had sat by the highway with no hope of release, but through the enlightened consciousness of Christ Jesus he left the wayside, found the true way, saw the true light, and obediently followed it.
